Disputing a Credit Card Charge

There are certain issues that credit card users may experience from time to time. There might be cases where certain charges are wrongly displayed on the credit card statement. Instances such as incorrectly billed items or being double billed for certain purchases have become quite common for many credit card users. When corrections are to be made, disputing those credit card charges can be fixed more effectively with the following tips.

Act Promptly

Credit card disputes can sometimes be resolved if you act promptly. The best way to handle the situation is by trying to resolve the issue with the retailer. If you try to act promptly and do it is a more courteous and reasonable manner, the retailers would usually be more accommodating to handle and address your complaint. Major retailers usually have customer service policies that are applicable within a certain period of time and citing certain circumstances. When you are bale to talk with any representative from the retailer, try to keep records of each interaction you make.

Write Complaints Down

If the issue wasn’t resolved when you approach the merchant, then the next step is for you to put your complaints into writing. Try to draft a short but detailed letter that outlines the complaint you have against the merchant and then send it via certified mail. Try to make a few copies of the letter as proof of your efforts as well as for your own records.

You then have to write a letter to your credit card company. When writing the letter, the Fair Credit Billing Act stipulates that you do this within 60 days after receiving the bill containing the disputed credit card charge. In your letter, you must provide your account number, the closing date of the bill, a description of the disputed item and your reason for withholding payment. This letter should be accompanied with other documents supporting your complaint. Send the letter via certified mail and to the "Billings Inquiries" address of your credit card company.

Continue Payments

After you have sent your letter and lodged the complaint, you may still need to keep paying your current credit balance along with the disputed item. You need to do this otherwise you might incur interest charges and other fees for late payment if you fail to do so. The credit card company would need to look into your complaint closely first before they might issue you the full refund or paying for the additional charges associated with the dispute. But in any case, you need to maintain paying your bill until the issue is resolved or you might suffer from additional headaches such as penalty charges on your credit card bill.
