Know Your Taxpayer Rights

Tax season is fast approaching once again. People become concerned about their income taxes and others the correct way and avoid the scrutiny and the ire of the IRS. It can be such a stressful time for many people in so many ways.

But aside from all these, it pays to know that you also have your own rights to uphold and not just be led by the dictates of others, especially the seemingly powerful IRS guys. Taxpayers have every right to try and fight for what they think is within the dictates of the law when it comes to their taxes. Here are some of those important rights.

Challenge IRS Notices

Taxpayers have every right to try and challenge IRS notices that they receive especially if they see some mistakes on them. After all, the IRS is a government agency that oversees millions of paperwork each tax season. They mail millions of IRs notices to different people each year with most of them demanding more money. Due to the huge task facing the IRs is also liable to commit mistakes. Many people may not know this but they can actually challenge such IRS notices and cancel them if they act promptly.

Challenge Tax Auditor’s Findings

Taxpayers also have the right to challenge findings by IRS auditors. Although most people would dread going against the dictates of the mighty IRS, it is within their rights to challenge and correct what they may owe the government. IRS auditors do not have the final authority over how much you need to pay for your taxes. You can challenge them and statistics even show that you have more than half the chance of getting your way.

Not Meet With The IRS Face to Face

Most people may dread being on the other end of a tax audit. But it is also within every taxpayer’s rights not to be put into a situation where that dread may multiply several times- a face to face meeting with IRS auditors. It is within legal bounds not to meet up personally with the IRS people but instead continue with conducting a correspondence audit through mail. This would be a less stressful option and may prevent you from making mistakes out of fear.
